Crystal Care: Maintain Your Rhinestone Fashion & Home Items
Rhinestones are a popular choice for adding a touch of sparkle and glamor to any outfit or home. Whether you have a wide collection of sparkling clothing and home decor or just a few statement pieces, it's important to know how to care for these items to keep them looking their best. Here are some tips:
Storing Rhinestone Embellished Clothing
One of the most important things you can do to care for rhinestone clothing is to store it properly. Rhinestones can become scratched or loose if they come into contact with sharp or rough surfaces; they can also catch on your other clothing and cause snags or other damage. To prevent this, fold in tissue paper if you have it in a drawer, or use a garment bag or similar protection to hang in your closet. Rhinestone clothing should be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to protect the adhesive.
Avoiding Harsh Chemicals
Rhinestones should be kept away from harsh chemicals, such as bleach, ammonia, vinegar, and other cleaning products. These chemicals can damage the finish on the rhinestones and cause them to become discolored or dull or even break down the adhesive and cause them to fall off. If you need to clean an item with rhinestones, use a mild soap and water solution with a gentle brush to remove dirt, oil, and other debris. For clothing, hand washing in cold water with a mild detergent is recommended. If you use a washing machine, wash the item inside out on a delicate cycle, preferably in a garment bag, and lay it out to dry.
Cleaning Tumblers, Placemats, and Chargers
Some rhinestone items come into contact with food or drinks and need to be washed regularly. It is important to follow the given instructions for each of those items to keep them looking their best. Handwashing will be the most important portion of their care. Running them through a cycle in a dishwasher will cause damage due to the high temperatures and water pressure, and the stones have the potential to cause issues for your dishwasher as well. If food or other residue needs to be removed, mild soap and water with a gentle brush should be used. Lay out to air dry before storing.
Keeping Pillows, Picture Frames, and More
Dusting rhinestone pillows, picture frames, and other home items regularly will keep them looking their best. Use a dry duster that can gently remove dust from any nooks and crannies without snagging the stones. It might seem a little outdated, but a feather duster is actually a great option for this. To polish a glass surface, spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth and wipe gently; spraying directly onto the surface can leave residue behind and get cleaner trapped where the cloth can’t reach. If a deeper cleaning is needed, use mild soap and water with a gentle brush and allow the item to air dry completely.
