Two properties make acrylic the right choice rather than merely the cheap one. Weight: a jacket back covered in glass changes how the garment hangs, and the same design in acrylic does not. Shatter resistance: for children's costumes and anything that will be dropped, a stone that does not break into fragments matters more than refraction.

Acrylic is moulded rather than cut, so it returns a flatter reflection than glass and scratches over time. It also yellows under sustained sunlight, which rules it out for window and sunlit pieces. For those, use glass; for a middle ground, resin.
