Pearls reflect rather than refract, so they read as a soft continuous sheen next to the hard flash of a rhinestone. That contrast is why the two are so often combined: a field of pearls with rhinestone accents gives a design depth that either alone cannot, and it works particularly well on bridal and formal pieces where all-over sparkle would be too much.

Pearls scratch and coatings can dull, so they belong on pieces that are worn rather than handled. Pair with machine-cut flatbacks for accent work.
