Machine-Cut Glass, Resin, or Acrylic: A Rhinestone Material Buying Guide

Three materials cover almost every rhinestone sold: glass, resin, and acrylic. They look similar in a product photo and behave nothing alike on a garment. The differences that matter are refraction, durability, and cost per stone, and the right answer changes with the project rather than with the budget. ## Why glass sparkles more Sparkle is refraction. Light enters the stone, bounces off the facets and the foiled backing, and leaves in a different direction than it arrived. Two properties decide how much of that happens: the refractive index of the material, and how precisely the facets are cut. Glass has a higher refractive index than resin, and resin higher than acrylic. That ordering is physics and no amount of finishing changes it. On top of it sits cut quality: machine-cut stones have more facets, cut to tighter tolerances, than moulded ones. A machine-cut glass stone is therefore sparkling twice over — better material, better geometry. Acrylic stones are moulded rather than cut. That is why they are cheap, and why they read as flat under direct light. ## The tiers we carry ### Ultra Machine Cut — the top of the range [Ultra rhinestones](/non-hotfix-rhinestones/ultra.html) are the best stones we sell. They carry as many facets as Swarovski stones with comparable clarity, at a fraction of the price. Glass, machine cut, and the correct choice when the piece has to hold up next to genuine crystal — bridal, competition costume, pageant, anything photographed under stage lighting. ### MC Glass and MC Flatback — the quality default [MC Glass hotfix](/hotfix-rhinestones/machine-cut.html) and [MC Flatback](/non-hotfix-rhinestones/flatback-mc.html) are genuine glass, machine cut and polished, at a quality level comparable to Preciosa. This is the tier most professional work sits in: it looks expensive, it survives laundering, and it costs a fraction of branded crystal. If you are unsure which tier a job needs, this is the safe answer. ### Korean and Imitation Korean — cost-conscious glass [Korean rhinestones](/hotfix-rhinestones/korean.html) are made on the best equipment available, which makes them exceptionally consistent — the property that matters when stones have to run through a machine or drop into a template without jamming. They are the choice when cost is a real constraint but quality cannot slip. [Imitation Korean](/hotfix-rhinestones/imitation-korean-bags.html) sits just below. Still glass, not acrylic, with a strong glue backing that holds through repeated washing. They cost less because they are made in China on Korean equipment and carry a 1–2% damage allowance, and we sell them by the full bag so the value works out. For high-volume work where a small reject rate is acceptable, this is the best cost per usable stone in the catalogue. ### Resin — the middle ground [Resin rhinestones](/non-hotfix-rhinestones/resin.html) sit between glass and acrylic in quality and price. More refraction and more durability than acrylic, less than glass. The honest use case is volume work where glass would blow the budget but acrylic would look cheap: costume fill areas, event décor, children's dance wear, anything with a short service life or a large coverage area. ### Acrylic — light, cheap, and useful for it [Acrylic rhinestones](/non-hotfix-rhinestones/acrylic.html) are lightweight and inexpensive, available in a wide range of sizes and colours. Two properties make them genuinely the right choice rather than merely the cheap one: weight, and shatter resistance. Weight matters on large-coverage garments. A jacket back covered in SS20 glass is heavy enough to change how the garment hangs; the same design in acrylic is not. Shatter resistance matters for children's costumes and anything that will be dropped. They do not sparkle like glass and they scratch. For a craft project, a one-night costume, or a classroom set, that is the correct trade. ### Metal alternatives [Rhinestuds](/hotfix-rhinestones/rhinestuds.html) and [nailheads](/hotfix-rhinestones/nailheads.html) are not rhinestones at all — they are metal, with an indented or flat face that reflects rather than refracts. A design that reads well in SS16 machine-cut glass often needs SS20 acrylic to achieve the same visual weight, which narrows the price gap more than the per-stone figures suggest. Buy by the bag where the option exists. Bag pricing on Imitation Korean in particular is where the real savings sit, and the 1–2% damage allowance is already priced in. ## Getting a physical sample first Refraction does not photograph honestly. Two stones that look identical on screen can be a tier apart in the hand, and the difference is obvious the moment you tilt them under a lamp. It is the cheapest mistake-avoidance available. ## Hotfix or not Backing is the other half of the decision, and in practice it narrows the material list rather than sitting orthogonal to it. Ultra is a non-hotfix stone: for a garment that needs top-tier sparkle *and* heat application, MC Glass hotfix is the highest tier available, and Ultra flatbacks set with gem adhesive are the alternative. Equally, if you want acrylic or resin, you are choosing non-hotfix and a glue by definition. Choose hotfix for fabric that will be washed. Choose non-hotfix for nail art, jewelry, heat-sensitive materials, and anything already assembled — then pick the best tier the chosen backing offers.
